After giving a workshop about sugar last winter, I was approached to write a blog article. The article was well received, and the editor asked if I would like to have my own column. I excitedly agreed.
Realizing that there are a lot of articles out there discussing health and wellness, I fluctuated about my approach and style between the hard core scientist and the casual author. Interestingly enough I fall somewhere in between. Information doesn’t have to be dry and boring, nor so casual that the benefit is hard to see.
I am just branching into the field of holistic health and wellness. It’s very different from how I was trained in traditional medicine, but it saved my life. After suffering for years after treatment for metastatic thyroid cancer, in attempt to return to wellness I finally turned to naturopathic methods. It took another year to feel better and another six months to really figure it out for myself, but I have not felt this good since I was in college.
The desire to be a resource for the people I work with in traditional medicine prompted my certification in holistic health and nutrition. Every person is unique, and the optimal diet is different for each of us. It is true that “One man’s poison is another’s meat.”
In my personal discovery I have found that gluten and pasteurized cow’s milk dairy products have a profound effect on how I think and feel. My brother used to say I romanticize food. In many ways he is right. I love knowing how to make healthy things taste good. I love cooking food and I love the experience of sharing food.
My approach is not pushy but informative. I encourage curiosity and discovery. Perfect examples of success occur gradually, but in recent times I have seen my fiancé go from a position of defense about diet to openness, new understanding, and feeling incredible. When we first met, our initial discussion of food after I told him I am gluten free and modify my intake to be as healthy as possible had a response of “I eat healthy. I cook fresh meat, potatoes, and usually a vegetable. I am fit and thin. My immune system is incredibly strong and I never get sick. I think that the only way to make a person stronger is to build up the immune system so that nothing ingested will have a negative effect on them.”
After months of subtle changes and simple explanations of things like why I add a specific ingredient to food to eating organic, the result is impressive. He now rarely craves the meat he had every night and prefers eating an organic and plant based diet because he realizes the amazing taste and how incredibly good it makes him feel.
My desire is to bring information to you in a fun manner that will result in improvement in your overall health, happiness, and state of being. My intention is to not only permanently change your relationship with food, but to bring understanding of how food affects all of our relationships from friendships and intimacy to money and spirituality, and vice versa. As a traditionally trained medical doctor and Air Force flight surgeon who traded her flight suit and combat boots in for pearls and a dress, true survival came when all my service and training ended, and I abandoned a regime of rules to truly be well. With this blog comes opportunity to reach so many others. Bring your questions, curiosity, and success stories. I can’t wait to hear from you.
