They say that in your mid-twenties, the celebrations begin to turn from birthday parties to weddings. And I have to say; “they” are definitely onto something. In the past year alone, I have been invited to more weddings than I have gone to in my entire life. The only thing I knew about what to wear to a wedding is to not wear white. So, with this new, unfamiliar territory, I decided to discuss wedding attire because everything I was researching and learning about for myself, I thought I should share with you guys.
I have become increasingly more aware of a certain struggle and anxiety when it comes to finding the right thing to wear to such a fun and happy celebration. This next wedding I am going to, a New England springtime wedding on the beach; really threw me. I think its something we can all agree on, that when you get that invitation in the mail one of your first thoughts is, “what do I wear?!” We’ve all been here, and this is what I’ve found…
Semiformal Weddings: These are the most common dress codes for weddings. The first thing in finding what to wear; is looking for something that makes you feel beautiful and excited to celebrate the day. Weddings, after all, are a happy day so wear something fun. Look for dresses that are made of silk, chiffon or satin fabrics. Dresses that hit above your knee, or right at your knee will usually keep your dress from being too fancy or too short.
Evening/Black Tie Weddings: While a new trend is wearing dress suits to this type of wedding, it is more cordial and appropriate to wear a long, formal dress. The dress doesn’t have to be a full-length gown, but it does have to be able to compliment a tuxedo. Look for darker colors, more luxurious fabrics, clean lines and something flattering- but not skimpy. With such an elegant dress keep the accessories simple, but sparkly. The combination of a statement and simplicity should be your aim when accessorizing your gown.
Casual Weddings: This is where you have the opportunity to be more playful when deciding what to wear. It is the difference between being relaxed, but not sloppy; looking laidback, but still put together. Look for a something a little bit fancier than a cotton sundress. You can mix and match soft pastels with edgy accessories, or the complete opposite and wear bright colors with earth-toned jewelry. Dresses made of cotton, linen and knit are all great to wear, as they are very appropriately casual and stylish.
Destination: Lucky you, you get to go to the beach and a party. Your destination is probably going to be warm, so wear dresses that are light and airy. Maxi dresses is a great trend to look into, they are casual but can easily be dressed up. Try fun prints or an asymmetrical hemline. Also, a tip is to bring a scarf and double it as a shawl. The more relaxed setting of this wedding gives way to a wider range of shoe selection. Whether it is strappy sandals or wedges, if you’re going to be on the beach, or walking on sand for a decent part of the day, make sure you don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes.
